Progress Update: Transient Gas/Liquid Two-Phase Flow Modeling

February 26, 2010

For multiphase flow pipeline operations, operation conditions may change, and consequently induce perturbations that affect pressure, liquid holdup and flow rate distributions. Knowledge of the dynamic behavior is very important to properly design and operate the pipeline, and upstream/downstream facilities. Currently, oil industry has developed capable all purpose transient software packages such as OLGA, PLAC, and TACITE. More efforts are underway to develop next generation all purpose multidimensional transient simulators such as HORIZON and LEDA . The objective of this research is to develop a simple and fast simulator for transient gas/liquid two-phase flow in pipes to be used a screening tool. Simulation for stratified flow pattern is finished and the results are compared with TUFFP transient two-phase flow experimental data. Comparison shows good agreement. Further effort is underway for the other flow patterns as well as for further simplification of the simulation based on drift flux approach.
